Through A Rectangle's Eyes

In an effort to be more creative, I chose twelve skills I wanted learn or improve on for this year. One of them is photography. I'm not a photographer, but I want to be able to take better pictures of my family, art, and the world around me. I want to tell stories with pictures.

Katsicles introduced me to a great photography challenge. It involves taking self-portraits for ___ amount of days (you choose). On first glance, I felt resistant. Why would I want to take pictures of myself? But the more I read, I realized it's a documentation of life--a picture journal, if you will. And I do love journals! So... I'm joining In The Picture by Urban Muser. My goal is to take a self-portrait every week, 52 pictures. I won't post them that often, but I might do a round-up once a month or something.

If you'd like to join, check out the button on my sidebar. You don't have to do 52 pictures. It can be 10 or 30 or 1--whatever number is meaningful to you.

  1. Fun idea. I find myself imagining ways and situations in which I could photograph myself!

  2. What a great way to document your life! I love seeing life through the camera lens, and finding new perspectives of everyday sights.

  5. So glad you posted this! I was thinking just a few weeks ago that I wanted to challenge myself to take self-portraits this year--and then I forgot all about it. I think I'll join in!

Oh, and her idea to have the link party once a month is a really good one...thinking I might do that for Storytellers too--give it some time to get started, spread the word, etc. What do you think?

  6. I've realised that blogging (I've been a blogger for about 6 years but never an avid one)for me has been an outlet of creativity. I took some photography classes while in college but i've learn much more on my own, and of course through various photography blogs. it does inspire me to be better at what i love.

  8. Hello Catherine. When I saw your picture for this post and read that you were wanting to improve you photography skills it reminded me of something that happened yesterday. I was sitting in the passenger seat on the way home from Stellenbosch when I happened to glance into the side mirror. No I didn't see myself but it did reflect the things that were in the back of the pick up. At first I couldn't recognise them and so I turned around and looked to see what was reflected in the mirror, a compressor. When I once again looked into the mirror I realised just how much like a photograph the reflection was and just how much better it looked without all the clutter, sort of framed by the mirror mounting.
The thought that popped into my head was what a good teaching tool a mirror in a black frame could be.
Well I thought it was interesting, hope next time you look in the side mirror you will also see a photograph.
    Blessings, Geoff.
