NEW Series: *Reduce Closet Clutter* Tip #4

For the final post in this mini-series, let's talk about our favorite subject: shoes. How many shoes should you have? My suggestion is two-weeks worth: fourteen to twenty pairs. Of course if you feel that's too few, choose an amount that's comfortable for you. Most of the shoes we LOVE, we wear often. They're comfortable, they're cute and versatile.  We wear them with jeans, skirts and shorts. Then there are the ones we keep "just in case". Some of them we've never worn. A good rule of thumb is if it's been a year since you pulled them on, then it's probably time to get rid of them.

I have a shoe rack in my closet and if the shoes don't fit on or under it, I don't keep them. My only exception for this is boots. I have a weakness for those and have room at the top of my closet especially for them. But when that section is full I don't allow myself anymore (I have to switch out a pair to add one).

Tip #4: Get rid of duplicates and be realistic about what you wear. How many shoes in the same color do you need? Evaluate what you like to wear versus what you like to buy. Do you purchase tons of heels but usually wear flats? Do you wear flip-flops most of the summer instead of wedge sandals? Be honest about what you actually wear and begin to cull what's not comfortable to you.

Let's Chat: What's your favorite type of shoe? Do you have a certain color you love?

  1. Oh girl, shoes are my weakness. But I've been good and haven't gotten a new pair in almost 6 months! I could live in my Toms or my flat slip-on sandals. I don't even think I have any shoes appropriate for winter...

    1. My weakness too! I tend to buy shoes before I'll buy anything else. Way to go on six months--that's incredible! My favorites are a super comfy pair of ballet slippers that are my go-to shoe.

  2. I need to go back and read the other three posts! As for shoes, I like things that do NOT have a heel. I have one pair of awesome, soft leather boots that have a little bit of a heel, but it's a wide one. Black shoes are a must, as are comfy cute summertime shoes. :)

    1. I'm with you on the heels! I have friends who can wear them super high, but I can't pull it off. Not to mention, I'm afraid I'd kill myself trying. Ha. I do have heels but they're a modest height.

    1. I don't think of a tomboy when I hear that; flats and jeans are a girl's best friend. :D

  4. I usually wear my sneakers they suit my lifestyle and Ive found they give my foot the support it needs
last July saw a big rethink in the way I wore my shoes after getting VERY bad sciatica where for a while i couldnt hardly walk for this same reason I prefer flats now

  5. I've had a lot of foot problems so I don't have many pairs of shoes and boots so they have to work with many things. Usually if I buy something in black I'll buy it in brown or grey as well. That usually gives me the right shoe or boot for the right outfit. All of my shoes are pretty dark but I recently bought some red shoes and some stone colored sandals for summer!
